Rules for every game mode on GuessThePlot โ free in your browser, no download required.
GuessThePlot has two complementary daily movie games. Both reset each day and work on desktop and mobile.
Every day you get one movie to identify. You start with a Bad Plot โ a technically true but misleading summary written to hide the obvious answer. Type a movie title to guess; search helps you pick the right film from our database.
Name the correct movie before you run out of guesses or production budget. A win unlocks your score, rank, and share card.
Stuck? Reveal extra clues one at a time. The Bad Plot is shown automatically; additional hints unlock in this order:
Each hint after the Bad Plot costs budget and lowers your final score. Try at least one guess from the Bad Plot alone before spending on hints.
You start with $750 of studio budget. Wrong guesses cost $50 each; extra hints cost $100 each. If budget hits zero, the game ends. Solve quickly and you can earn a speed bonus back onto your budget.
You get up to 3 guesses per puzzle. Use the movie search to pick a title โ close matches still count as wrong guesses, so choose carefully.
Winning puzzles earn points from a base of 1,000. Fewer hints, fewer wrong guesses, and faster solves all help. Speed bonuses apply at 15s, 30s, 60s, and 2 minutes.
Signed-in players track streaks, history, and leaderboard placement. Share your result card without spoiling the answer for friends.
Inspired by โsix degrees of separation,โ Cinema-Degrees asks you to link a start movie to a target movie through a chain of films connected by shared cast or crew.
Each step in your chain looks like this:
Movie A โ (shared actor or director) โ Movie B โ โฆ โ Target movie
You can undo steps or jump back to an earlier film in your chain if you take a wrong turn.
Cinema-Degrees uses the same anchor movie as the daily plot puzzle. To avoid spoilers, finish today's Daily Plot (win or lose) before the full degrees ladder unlocks. Guests can still try a practice puzzle without spoiling today's main game.
Puzzles are grouped by how many links the optimal path needs โ from easier 2-degree chains up to 6-degree marathons:
Signed-in players unlock higher tiers on the daily ladder as they win more degrees puzzles over time. Each day you can advance one tier on the ladder after clearing the previous one.
Your rank compares your chain length to the shortest possible path:
Purity is a fun label for whether your route leaned on blockbusters, indie films, or a mix โ it does not affect scoring.
Signed-in players can spend Popcorn on optional Scout hints mid-chain โ nudges toward a strong next film when you're stuck. Popcorn is earned through play; hints are never required to finish a puzzle.
You can play without signing up. A free account adds persistence and community features โ no payment required.

After playing a movie, signed-in users can challenge friends to guess the same film from its Bad Plot. Share the challenge link; your friend opens it and plays that specific puzzle. Great for group chats โ just don't post the answer in the thread.
Not a daily puzzle โ a separate fun mode where you pick movies you love (or love to hate) and our AI critic panel roasts your taste. Share the roast card if you dare.
Share your scores and streaks, not today's answers. Spoilers ruin the daily ritual for everyone else.
